I spend the rest of the week practicing spells with Celie and Lukas. Mykel has barely spoken to me and I’m beginning to think either a) there’s something else bothering him, or b) Blade was right, and he’s being very immature about this situation.

I’m sitting in the library alone until I spot Celie and Lukas making their way over to me. They seem determined, like they’re on a mission.

“Where have you guys been?” I ask.

“We’ve been eavesdropping on Alatar,” Lukas says.

“What! Are you serious?”

“Yes, and we overheard something,” Celie says.

“You guys can’t just sneak around eavesdropping on him. Do you know how dangerous that is? He’s obviously up to something bad. We have no clue what he’s capable of. If he were to catch you—”

“Aria,” Celie cuts me off. “Just listen.”

“Okay, so we couldn’t see who he was talking to, but he said something about secret evidence and proof of what he’s done,” Lukas says.

“Who’s he?”

“We don’t know. And we didn’t get a chance to find out what he did either, but the secret proof...it’s hidden here, like, at the manor.”

“Our hypothesis is that it’s hidden in that room Mrs. Patrickson showed us on the tour when we got here. The one she said is off limits,” Celie says.

So that’s what’s in there. Some sort of proof, evidence of something Alatar’s hiding. Something bad.

“Wow,” I say.

Celie takes a seat next to me. “Crazy, right? There’s something suspicious going on here. We have to figure it out,” Celie says.

I have to tell Blade.

But I can’t. Celie, Mykel, Lukas, and I promised we wouldn’t tell anyone what we’ve discovered about Alatar. At least not until we ourselves know what exactly it is we’ve discovered.

“After the trial,” I say. “We will get to the bottom of this. After the trial.”
